Distortions | The duty

The results of the last Quebec elections demonstrate the backwardness of the voting system that stems from British traditions. On its face, the number of elected members in relation to the votes cast denotes an outrageous disproportion that borders on apparent illegitimacy. But the shoe pinches even more when you see the fate reserved for the PQ in the distribution of questions (five per hundred) and resources granted. In both cases, it is medical assistance in dying that is maliciously offered to him by the other parties.

Some claim that the rules of the game are thus made and that we must submit to them. To these defenders of the status quo, it is important to point out that election results do not reflect the democratic choice of voters. If proportional representation is not in the cards of the caquists, the latter, as well as the oppositions, could have compensated for this “injustice” by an opening to facilitate a minimally effective presence of the PQ.

Unfortunately, the CAQ (90 deputies with 40.98% of the vote), the PLQ (21 deputies with 14.37% of the vote) and QS (11 deputies with 15.43%) emptied the fund, leaving almost nothing to the PQ despite its 14.61% of votes cast. Why does Prime Minister Legault go after the party that gave birth to him politically? Similarly, wouldn’t the PLQ benefit from maintaining an officially independentist party that could serve as a counter-face? Also, QS, out of respect for its sovereignist, environmentalist and leftist solidarity members, shouldn’t it help a party like the PQ which would contribute to advancing these ideas in the National Assembly?

As can be seen, electoral distortions have distorted the democratic choice of voters. Aware of this new reality, the various political parties should have governed themselves accordingly and granted a decent place for everyone. By excluding the PQ from the parliamentary game, they show us their true face. These parties engage in petty opportunist politics to the detriment of an expressed popular will, thus fueling the cynicism of a population that is fed up with these pettiness of their elected officials.
