(Washington) The Government of Canada officially intervenes in the legal battle over the Line 5 cross-border pipeline.

The latest batch of court documents includes an “amicus curiae” brief from Ottawa opposing the closure of the pipeline while talks are underway between Canada and the United States.
The legal dispute between Michigan and pipeline owner Enbridge is shaping up to be a carbon copy of an almost identical case that Governor Gretchen Whitmer dropped last year.
Michigan dropped that effort after District Court Judge Janet Neff agreed with Enbridge that the case should go to federal court.
State Attorney General Dana Nessel instead took a separate case to county court, which Enbridge is again trying to push federally.
Canada’s brief urges the tribunal not to shut down Line 5 while treaty negotiations or arbitration continue between the two countries.
