Disgraced fashion mogul Peter Nygard charged with sexual assault in Montreal

Canadian fashion mogul Peter Nygard has been charged in Quebec with sexual assault and forcible confinement.

The man, who also faces charges for sex crimes in Toronto and the United States, is scheduled to appear at the Montreal courthouse on Tuesday, according to the Director of Criminal and Penal Prosecutions of Quebec.

An arrest warrant issued in Montreal alleges that between November 1, 1997 and November 15, 1998, Peter Nygard sexually assaulted a victim identified only by his initials.

The document also alleges that during the same period, the man “constrained, imprisoned or forcibly seized” the same person in Montreal.

Last fall, Peter Nygard was charged in Toronto with six counts of sexual assault and three counts of forcible confinement in alleged events dating back to the late 1980s and mid-2000s. He has denied the allegations.

Earlier this year, a Toronto court denied his bail request.

The former fashion executive also risks being extradited to the United States.

He was first arrested in Winnipeg in 2020 under the Extradition Act after being charged with nine counts in connection with sex offenses in New York. US authorities claim he used his position in the fashion industry to attract women and girls.

Peter Nygard, who denied the allegations through his lawyer, had agreed to be extradited to the United States to face a sex trafficking charge.

Last week, Federal Justice Minister David Lametti said he had issued an order stating that Peter Nygard could only be extradited to the United States after his legal proceedings in Canada had been completed.

The former head of a multi-million dollar clothing company is also facing a class action lawsuit in the United States involving 57 women with similar allegations.
