Waimea, the grand canyon of the Pacific that is located on the island of Kauai, is part of the Hawaiian archipelago. This island, which hosts an infinite variety of tropical plants and flowers, is nicknamed “the garden island”.

How could an island seven times smaller than Corsica generate such vast and spectacular landscapes? Volcanism has given Kauai its soaring tropical cliffs and its jewel, Waimea, the Grand Canyon of the Pacific. In the northernmost island of the Hawaiian archipelago, a Tunisian tourist opens her eyes wide. “There’s so much greenery, it’s really cool. There’s so much color […]. That’s wonderful”she describes.

Rainbows gave the state of Hawaii its motto: “the Rainbow state”. The archipelago knows all the climates of the planet: temperate, tropical, desert and polar. The island of Kauai is one of the rainiest places in the world, hence its nickname “the garden island”. “Hawaii is the most isolated archipelago on the surface of the globe. We have a very large number of endemic plants, that is to say, which only exist and grow here”says Adam Williams, a botanist with the Hawaii Forestry and Wildlife Division.
