On May 6, during his coronation, Charles III will receive the crown jewels, carefully guarded in the Tower of London. What is the value of these precious jewels? Response elements.
The royal scepter, orb and crown are the UK’s most treasured relics. After their destruction during a revolution, the crown jewels were reproduced in the 17th century for the coronation of Charles II. Their place is central to every royal coronation. In a precise ceremonial, King George VI (in 1937) and Elizabeth II (in 1953) received the orb, the symbol of spiritual power, and the two scepters, symbols of authority and mercy. The crown has not been worn since.
“Immeasurable value”
It is carefully guarded within the walls of the Tower of London (United Kingdom), behind reinforced concrete doors. Alongside it are a hundred other gems, such as the State Sword. No one knows the value of the crown jewels. “All I can say is that they are of immeasurable value. They have an inestimable symbolic, historical and religious importance. It is therefore a collection that is priceless”, explains Charles Ferris, curator and historian of the Royal Palaces. Camilla, the Queen consort, will receive the crown from Queen Mary.
