Nearly 860,000 middle school students took the second part of the brevet exams on Tuesday, July 2. After French and mathematics on Monday, third-year students from mainland France, Reunion Island and Mayotte took the history-geography and moral and civic education exams for the brevet (EMC) in the morning and the science exam in the afternoon.

On the history-geography side, both streams (general and professional) focused on the Second World War. In the general series, middle school students had to work on an extract from the testimony of Ginette Kolinka, a survivor of the Auschwitz-Birkenau camp in Poland, as well as a photograph taken in May-June 1944 at the time of the arrival of the Jews in this same camp. They also had to comment on the testimony of a young person engaged in civic service.

Students in the vocational stream came across a testimony by Odette Daltroff, a survivor of the Drancy transit camp, near Paris. They also had to think about the territorial dynamics of contemporary France. For the EMC test, they had to comment on Marie-Claude’s testimony, “digital shipwreck”.

On the science side, the physics-chemistry test in the general stream focused on the Olympic and Paralympic Games: it was necessary to measure the pH of Olympic swimming pools and take diving measurements.

In the vocational stream, middle school students had to learn about toxoplasmosis and analyze blood test results. They also worked on how a connected home works.
