Volunteers are busy on the Gallo-Roman site of Châteaubleau. An exceptional place discovered by a teacher in 1850. Excavation campaigns have been organized since the 1960s on this complex which includes a theater, several sanctuaries and even a counterfeit currency workshop. Selected for the 2023 edition of the Heritage Mission, this site will benefit from funds to carry out the necessary preservation work.
“All these unearthed structures will be listed, numbered and drawn. We also keep the ceramics, coins and all the archaeological material that will allow us to date the structures”, explains Thibault Hébert, volunteer on these excavations.
Since 1961, successive campaigns have brought to light a number of objects thanks to the work of the La Riobé association. This Gallo-Roman site would have been active between the 1st and 5th centuries AD. “We excavated several residential areas, which gravitate around several sanctuaries, there are at least four says Fabien Piilon, president of the La Riobé association. And one of these sanctuaries is equipped with a large theater, which could accommodate several hundred or even thousands of people.
Projects for the future of the site
This remarkable place has therefore been chosen as an emblematic site for Ile-de-France by the Mission for the Safeguarding of Heritage in Danger. Its restoration will be financed by the funds collected within the framework of the Heritage Loto.
For the time being, nothing is yet definitively established, but several projects could see the light of day. “There will be the establishment of a structure that will symbolize in the eyes of the public the old dimensions of the theater, there will also be a more educational place. And above all we would like to create a museum structure”, says Yannick Guillo, president of the community of communes of Brie Nangisienne. To discover the places, go there on June 17 and 18 on the occasion of the European Days of Archeology.
