Discover the first works of young directors at the Festival du premier film francophone de la Ciotat, under the presidency of Olivier Dahan

On the occasion of the 39th edition of the festival of the first French-speaking film La Ciotat cradle of cinema, lovers of the 7th art can discover until June 5 the first works of young directors, some of which are screened in preview.

Olivier Dahan, director among others of The kid and of Grace of Monaco, takes over the presidency of this 2022 edition. The filmmaker from La Ciotat remains very attached to the city of his first cinematographic emotions. “I met Claude Sautet here on the occasion of the festival, it’s always good, meetings, and enjoying the films”, assures the filmmaker, who confides that he is not too much of a fan of competition.

He will have the heavy task, with the other members of the jury (the actors Zinedine Soualem, Jérémy Banster, Carole Franck and the filmmakers Mona Achache, Emmanuel Poulain-Arnaud and Dorothée Sebbagh) to decide between eighteen films (feature and short films) for the awards. “There are films which are there to better understand the world and there are films which are there to forget it, I believe that both are very important”assures Isabelle Masson, the director of the festival.

“La Ciotat, cradle of cinema”, this is how for almost 40 years, the charming seaside resort of Bouches-du-Rhône has relived with emotion the first steps of young directors thanks to the festival of the same name.

A name naturally inherited from cinematographic history since it was here, 126 years ago, that the film Larrival of the train at La Ciotat station was filmed by the Lumière brothers. Made in 1896, during a family stay in the region, the short 50-second film shows a scene of daily life.
