Since 2019, the teams of the Cité du design have been working on the theme of bifurcations, accompanied by the Saint-Etienne territory and many national and international cultural actors. This theme explores the paths of profound social changes that the health crisis makes all the more sensitive.
At this moment, design also forks in its mode of action: it knows perfectly how to design objects of comfort. From now on, it leads technical controversies, it equips its partners with collaborative design methods, it creates open platforms to welcome third-party actors into the project. This new design materializes in the society in crisis the new forms of sobriety, otherness, democracy and relationship to the living. This tool, born of industrial capitalism, is probably becoming the tool of bifurcations, provided that it is submitted to criticism from all audiences, that it is debated now, to better solicit it: this is the challenge of the 12th International Design Biennale Saint-Étienne des Bifurcations.
The biennale is built around exhibitions and strong positions around and on design. It promotes contemporary creation accessible to all audiences in a festive atmosphere punctuated by events, visits and workshops.
