UEFA is looking into the excesses of the Vélodrome. The European body opened disciplinary proceedings on Wednesday September 14 against Olympique de Marseille and Eintracht Frankfurt. The match between the two teams, won by the Germans (1-0) on Tuesday evening, was marked by multiple incidents between the supporters.
The two clubs will thus have to answer for “throwing projectiles” and D’“ignition of smoke”charges to which are added, in particular, the use of lasers and “trouble” caused by Marseille supporters, as well as “degradations” and “racist behavior” Frankfurt side. “UEFA’s disciplinary bodies will decide in due course”specifies the European organization, which opened a similar procedure last week after the clashes between supporters during Nice-Cologne in the Europa League conference.
Tuesday evening in Marseille, a German supporter was injured by a smoke bomb fire in the stands and 17 people were arrested on the sidelines of the meeting, according to the Bouches-du-Rhône prefecture. Furthermore, inside the stadium, “German supporters gave Nazi salutes in the visitors’ stand”said the police headquarters, adding that a report had been made to UEFA.
For its part, OM acknowledged on Wednesday in a press release “jets of smoke bombs and pyrotechnic devices in the north-west sector of the stadium”saying “to regret” them “irresponsible acts of a few individuals” despite upstream work with the authorities and “fan groups”. OM have been under a suspended closed-door sentence for the use of pyrotechnic devices since the semi-final return of the Europa League conference against Feyenoord last spring.
