The President of Senegal, Macky Sall, commits to organizing the presidential election “as soon as possible”, his services announced on Friday February 16. This announcement comes after the veto put by the Constitutional Council on its decision to postpone the election initially scheduled for the end of February.

The Constitutional Council thus invalidated on Thursday the postponement of the presidential election until December 15 and asked the authorities to hold the vote “as soon as possible”. Macky Sall “intends to fully implement the Council’s decision” And “will without delay carry out the necessary consultations for the organization of the presidential election as soon as possible”added the presidency.

The postponement of the presidential election had provoked an outcry from the opposition and civil society who cried out “constitutional coup”. Protests left three people dead and dozens injured, and Senegal’s key partners, concerned about the risk of violence, called on the government to hold the election as quickly as possible.
