Thursday, April 28, the United Nations warns of the growing number of climatic disasters. It invites public authorities to take immediate decisions.
The planet seems to be caught in a spiral of accelerating climatic catastrophes. For the United Nations, the Earth is engaged in self-destruction. “The world is hit by an increasing number of disasters and they are caused by global warming“, says Mami Mizutori, Special Representative of the Secretary General of the United Nations. For 20 years, 350 to 500 disasters have been counted each year at an estimated cost of 170 billion per year.
In 2021, storm Ida in the United States and floods in Germany and Belgium caused 44 and 150 deaths respectively. A never-before-seen heat dome has been observed in British Columbia. “We are, somewhere, very, very behind in terms of adaptation, because we still harbor the illusion that we will manage to achieve the objectives of the Paris agreement“, warns François Gemenne, IPCC climate specialist.
