(Toronto) Quebecer Denys Arcand was selected for the highest distinction of the Directors Guild of Canada (GCR) this year. The 82-year-old Oscar winner will receive the GCR Lifetime Achievement Award at a gala in Toronto on October 21.

The guild describes Arcand as one of the “legends of Canadian cinema.” He won the only Canadian Academy Award for a foreign language film with Barbarian invasionsin 2003, and was nominated three other times.

The GCR says this year’s Impact Award for Inclusion and Leadership is being awarded to Métis multidisciplinary artist Marie Clements, who wrote and directed Bones of Crows.

The guild notes that the CBC film-turned-miniseries featured more than 60 Indigenous actors and more than 50 BIPOC people made up the crew, many of whom were given lead roles for the first time.
