The franceinfo Talk looks at the foundations for the fight against anti-Semitism launched on May 6 by the government. Sarah Calamand receives Dominique Sopo, president of SOS Racisme, Nonna Mayer, political science researcher at the CNRS as well as Jonas Pardo, trainer against anti-Semitism, trade union activist and member of the Golem collective.

The number of anti-Semitic acts recorded in France having almost quadrupled according to figures from the Ministry of the Interior, Aurore Bergé, minister in charge of the fight against discrimination, announced at the end of March the organization of meetings to fight against anti-Semitism.

An increase in anti-Semitic acts

In terms of form, the minister wanted to bring together the heads of several associations (Licra, SOS Racisme, etc.), representatives of the six main religions practiced in France as well as victims of anti-Semitic acts who agreed to testify. The organization of such meetings followed the call of the collective “We will live” which demanded a commitment from the candidates for the European elections to take action against anti-Semitism.

These meetings also echo the increase in anti-Semitic acts occurring after the October 7 attacks highlighted by the Representative Council of Jewish Institutions of France (Crif).

In addition, on the night of Monday May 13 to Tuesday May 14, the Wall of the Righteous, of the Shoah Memorial in Paris, was vandalized with paintings of red hands.. The mayor of Paris Anne Hidalgo announced that she had initiated a referral to the public prosecutor in a press release denouncing “the attack on the memory” of the Shoah.
