In a short press release issued on Sunday morning, the Latvian team announced that it was leaving the circuit “and all its structures”

“The decision to withdraw from the KHL has been taken, thus expressing a clear position of the management of the club. In such a military and humanitarian crisis, we see no possibility of cooperation with the League,” said council chairman J. Savickis.

The rumor had been circulating for a few days, while Latvia’s Minister of Education and Science, Anita Muižniece, was pushing for it.

This decision comes a few days after the Jokerit of Helsinki decided not to take part in the KHL playoffs, which are due to start on 1er March.

This means that there are only three non-Russian teams left in the circuit at the moment: Dinamo de Minsk in Belarus, Barys Nur-Sultan in Kazakhstan and Kunlun Red Star in China.

Remember that the International Ice Hockey Federation is to hold a meeting next Monday to discuss the future of hockey in Russia.
