Restaurants: digital tipping is not unanimous

More and more restaurants are offering a tip at the bank terminal when paying the bill. A practice that divides both customers and restaurateurs.

When paying the bill in the “Brique Machine” restaurant, the bank terminal suggests adding a tip equivalent to 10%, 15% or 20% of the amount of the bill. A message which encourages a customer to give 1.10 euros more, but which is not enough to convince two friends, who did not give more money. This practice is spreading in restaurants.

A restaurateur wants the gesture to remain spontaneous

At “Brique Machine”, tips have tripled since the software was installed. This represents up to 400 euros in additional net salary each month for the servers. An argument for recruiting in this sector under pressure, according to Léo da Cruz, restaurant manager. In another establishment, “Le Mestruet”, there is no software to encourage customers to tip. And yet, there are still so many of them doing it. Alain Fontaine, the manager, wants the gesture to remain spontaneous. In France, a third of customers say they tip the waiter at the end of the meal.
