While they regularly denounce difficult working conditions, delivery workers who operate for digital platforms can currently vote to choose their union representatives. An election that few of them know about.

The elections of representatives for VTC and delivery people begin Wednesday May 22. These elections are little known to workers. Only 2% of them had voted in 2022. Several unions, such as Union-indépendants, are therefore distributing leaflets to delivery workers to inform them about this election.
“Today a delivery man, when he breaks his face on a bike or scooter and is injured, he has nothing. When he is sick he has nothing. Our objective is therefore to enable these delivery men to be able to benefit from turnover compensation when he is injured or sick, to be able to continue to live with dignity”explains Fabian Tosolini, national delegate of the Independent Union.
The unions are also demanding better remuneration from the platforms. Ryan is an Uber Eats delivery person and receives a ride “at 84 cents for 1.7km”. To deliver, he pays Ursaf, gasoline, maintenance and insurance for his scooter.
“Does 1.7 km really cost 84 cents? Never in my life. I’m losing money”

Ryan was not aware of these elections and remains moderately convinced. “Is this really going to change anything? If we don’t benefit from this, frankly it’s pointless”, he warns. For Elyas, also a deliveryman, this vote is still important. “The problem with Uber is that their objective is to take on as many delivery people as possible and whether the ride costs 6 euros, 4 euros or 3 euros, there will always be someone to do it. ‘disguised slavery’he denounces.
For these elections, the Union Independents union plans 10% participation. That is double compared to 2022. Delivery people and VTCs have from Wednesday May 22 to Thursday May 30 to elect their representatives.
