Homicides of women and girls result in manslaughter charges more often than murder charges when the victims are Indigenous rather than non-Indigenous.
At least that is the conclusion of a study focusing on decisions rendered by the country’s courts between 2009 and 2021 published Wednesday by Statistics Canada.
During this period, 490 Indigenous women and girls were victims of homicide, which corresponds to a rate of 4.27 Indigenous women and girls killed per 100,000 women and girls from these communities. This rate is six times higher than that recorded among non-Indigenous people (0.73).
