The Azov Battalion, accused by Russia of being neo-Nazi, has the wolfsangel as its symbol, which refers to Nazi imagery. Some pro-Russian activists say its logo has changed.
On social networks, pro-Russian accounts claimed that the Azov Battalion changed its logo and removed a neo-Nazi symbol from it. They share the same photo of soldiers, wearing a patch on which is marked “Azov, Kharkiv special forces”, with a logo resembling a trident, the national symbol of Ukraine. In these images, the traditional logo of the Azov regiment, called the wolfsangel, which refers to Nazi imagery, has disappeared.
Are the soldiers of Azov trying to get rid of this symbol? The British newspaper The Times shared the establishment of a new Azov unit, in Kharkiv, on May 29, 2022. The article claims “the Azov battalion removed a neo-Nazi symbol from its insignia, which until then helped feed Russian propaganda”. Yet on the regiment’s official website, the wolfsangel is still prominently displayed. These symbols linked to the extreme right are part of a desire to provoke Russia and respond to a military archetype, which the Azov battalion does not wish to abandon.
