The franceinfo Talk returns to the current water crisis in Mayotte. Ludo Pauchant receives Estelle Youssouffa, LIOT MP from Mayotte, Thierry Gadault, journalist and author of works on water management in France and Samora Curier, streamer, podcaster, creator of the video game “Eau Secours”.
Faced with a historic droughtMayotte is forced to restrict access to water for almost a month. Throughout the Overseas Department, repeated cuts are taking place, depriving 300,000 people of access to tap water. “The water will be turned off at 4 p.m. then turned back on at the same time 48 hours later” announced the prefecture in a press release last September 4.
The Mahorais in suffering
Water is a rare source in France’s poorest department. This comes from 80% of two water reservoirs intended to store rain. In this context of drought, restrictions are announced to preserve the resource until the next rainy season, in December. But these restrictions have direct consequences on the health of the Mahorais.
In this context of crisis, the environmentalist MP Sandrine Rousseau asked the Minister of the Interior for progress to help the population of Mayotte. The latter called on Gérald Darmanin to “leave Paris to go to Mamoudzou”.
