Detroit | Shooting in water playground leaves many injured

(Rochester Hills) Gunfire erupted at a wading pool in Rochester Hills, a suburb of Detroit, as families frolicked in the water to beat the summer heat, leaving several injured, authorities said.

Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard told reporters that “it appears we have nine, maybe ten gunshot victims with various types of injuries.”

Authorities said they believe they have a possible suspect at a nearby home. A handgun and three empty magazines were recovered, according to the sheriff.

“So, preliminary, it appears the suspect fired potentially 28 times, reloading multiple times,” Bouchard said.

The Oakland County Sheriff’s Office said there were “numerous injured victims.”

In a social media post, authorities said there was still an active crime scene. People were asked to avoid the area.

Authorities did not immediately provide additional information and the condition of the victims was not immediately known.

Rochester Hills is about 15 miles south of Oxford, where in 2021 a 15-year-old fatally shot four high school students.

Sheriff Mike Bouchard said Saturday’s shooting was “a low blow” for the county.

“We have experienced so much tragedy,” he said. You know, we don’t even fully understand what happened at Oxford. And, you know, we’re now faced with another total tragedy that we have to deal with. »
