Detroit Red Wings goaltender Jack Campbell is temporarily withdrawing from the team. He has registered with the assistance program of the National Hockey League (NHL) and the Players’ Association, the organization announced late Friday afternoon.
Campbell joined the Red Wings when the free agent market opened. He agreed to the terms of a one-year contract at $775,000, just above the minimum allowed by the NHL. The Oilers had bought out the last three years of his contract in the preceding days.
The American spent most of the last campaign in the American League, with the Bakersfield Condors, the Oilers’ farm team. This is where his goalkeeping coach Sylvain Rodrigue worked to restore his confidence, resulting in an 18-13-1 season.
Campbell had signed a 5-year, 25 million contract in July 2022 which was to make him the Oilers’ number one goalie, but he was supplanted by Stuart Skinner before being demoted altogether.
