The government keeps saying it: pension reform will benefit women. A misleading statement.

Where does the intox come from?

The government keeps saying it: pension reform will benefit women. On France 2, Thursday evening, Elisabeth Borne wanted to give an illustration : “In the past, women retired later than men. Today, they retire at around the same age (sic) (…). Tomorrow, after the reform, they will leave earlier than the men”.
At the same time, a visual signed by the government was displayed on the screen, where you could actually see two curves intersect. From generation 62, women will retire earlier than men.

Why is this misleading?

The figures are true, they come from a study by the Cnav, the National Old Age Insurance Fund. Today, it is true that women leave later than men, in particular because they more often have choppy careers and are more forced to wait until the age of the full rate to leave without a discount. And it is also correct that the curves will intersect in the near future.

But now, this has absolutely nothing to do with the pension reform, on the contrary. Without the reform, we would observe the same inversion, and it would be even more accentuated in the future in favor of women. The reason lies in the development of women’s careers. The CNAV study also shows that women would leave even earlier than men without the reform.

In summary: women will leave well before men in the near future, not thanks to the reform… but in spite of the reform which will rather slow down this dynamic.
