Where does the intox come from?

According to many articles or comments on social networks, Spain would have decriminalized sexual relations with animals, on the sole condition that the latter are not injured. This supposed information was even quoted by the Polish Minister of Justice, who took the opportunity to attack the excesses of “leftism”.

Why is this wrong?

This rumor comes from a law to fight against animal abuse proposed by the Minister of Social Rights and Secretary General of the left-wing Podemos party. Before, the law only criminalized “the sexual exploitation of animals”, which could be interpreted as only concerning situations involving a financial transaction.
The new legislation aims to remedy this problem, by prosecuting “anyone who causes injury to a vertebrate animal which requires veterinary treatment for the restoration of its health”, “by any means or procedure, including acts of a sexual nature”.

But this formulation has also received criticism from jurists, suggesting that it would amount to excluding from the scope of the law sexual relations with animals… if they are not injured.

In response to the controversy, the minister’s office said the text, which has yet to pass the Senate, will be reviewed and will make it clear that all sex acts with animals will be criminalized. In cases where they cause injuries, they should even be considered crimes.

In summary, if there was a hiccup in the wording of the text, the Spanish left has no intention of legalizing bestiality.
