Former MP Florian Philippot incriminates the President of the European Commission, who, according to him, “demands a 15% increase! 4,700 euros per month more!”.

Where does the intox come from?

In a June 12 tweetthe former deputy Florian Philippot incriminates the President of the European Commission, which, according to him, “requires a 15% increase! 4,700 euros per month more! After an 8% salary increase already in January. Ditto for EU officials!” The former right-hand man of Marine Le Pen links an article from the Austrian tabloid Express. Who clearly indicates that Ursula von der Leyen “wants increase his European monthly salary to 35,957 euros”, either “4,687.5 euros more than his current salary”.

Why is this wrong?

Although a salary increase system does exist for its civil servants, the European Commission, specifies to Désintox that “the updating remuneration is based, since 2013, on an automatic calculation, without any margin of political appreciation”.

It is true that European civil servants, and therefore the president of the commission, experienced two revaluations in 2022 of 2.4% then 4.5%, due to inflation.

In mid-June, a new increase of 1.7% was recordedpoRtant the salary of Ursula von der Leyen at nearly 32,000 euros gross.

The budget documents indicate a total increase of 4.4% over the year 2023. A figure to be taken with a grain of salt, specifies the commission, because its objective is only to anticipate possible budgetary needs.

But there is no trace of a jump of 15%.

The commission, which argues that the increases of the last two years are lower than inflation in Belgium, published a press release to deny this false information.
