“We are here, we are here, even if Macron does not want it, we are here”. It was while singing this anthem of protest well known to French demonstrators that a man was arrested on April 12, in the Netherlands. The context ? That day, Emmanuel Macron is visiting the campus of the University of Amsterdam. On images broadcast by BFMTV we can see the man pinned to the ground a few meters from the President, while the latter is getting out of the limousine.
MP LFI Raquel Garrido, on Twitter, seems to indicate that it is agents ensuring the safety of Emmanuel Macron who are at work behind this arrest. She writes: “Macron’s praetorian guard seems to claim extraterritorial jurisdiction to limit the freedom of expression of the French, to challenge them, to exclude them from public meetings… wherever they are. Is it legal?”
Why is this wrong?
Dutch photographer Ramon Van Flymen was there. Contacted by Desintox, he explains that the man was arrested in his race by “Dutch security agents and Dutch police officers”. The protester had come with a woman, subdued a little earlier. According to this photographer, the duo was taken to the police station after their arrest. And according to the Élysée, these two people are of Dutch and not French nationality. This has not yet been confirmed by the local police. But what is certain is that the two demonstrators were not controlled by a close guard of the President who would be responsible for silencing any dispute.
