Did the pope receive neo-Nazi Ukrainians? This is what many Internet users said after the reception, on May 11 at the Vatican, of Kateryna Prokopenko and Julia Fedosiuk. The two women, married to members of the Azov regiment entrenched in the Azovstal factory in Mariupol, have carried out numerous actions in recent weeks to raise international awareness. In France, we also saw them on BFM TV.
Afterwards, many commenters were quick to share photographs and montages showing blonde women resembling Kateryna Prokopenko, posing with a swastika-covered flag or tank top, or giving the Hitler salute. In France, the site Oh my mag relayed the controversy and accused the young blonde woman of being a neo-Nazi.
As Désintox has verified, none of these images show Kateryna Prokopenko, however, the photos were already circulating in 2010 in Poland and show another Ukrainian woman.
Ironically, Internet users, who relayed false accusations about Kateryna Prokopenko, missed very real elements concerning Julia Fedosiuk, the dark-haired woman present at her side. Détox has found several elements showing its closeness to the Ukrainian far right. She thus became known for her rejection of abortion and the rights of LGBT people or her anti-feminism within the “Srіblo Troyandi” collective, where some proven neo-Nazis stand out.
