On the occasion of Pink October, Ludo Pauchant receives Sandrine Planchon, director of the Ruban Rose Association, Dominique Stoppa-Lyonnet, professor of genetics at Paris Cité University, Ludmila Zie, director of the documentary “Ludmila s’en- goes-to-war”, Mounia El-Kotni, author of “Im-Patiente” and Taratatou, tattoo artist.

Every year, the month of October is dedicated to breast cancer prevention. The annual Pink October campaign is intended to inform and raise awareness about breast cancer screening as well as to raise the funds necessary for research.

Raise awareness about screening and prevention

Oncologists emphasize screening and prevention as key elements in the fight against breast cancer. Among the signs that help detect the disease, “there is palpation of a mass in the chest”, “alteration of breast volume”, “redness or inflammation” in this area, explains oncologist Barbara Pistilli.

In France, the screening program organized by mammography is offered free of charge, every two years, for all women aged 50 to 74. However, in fact, less than one in two women in this age group participated in this program between 2021 and 2022, according to Santé Publique France.

A healthy lifestyle is also important to prevent disease: it is estimated that 8,000 breast cancers could be avoided each year, if we reduce our alcohol consumption for example, estimates Dr Anne Vincent Salomon. If causes are “avoidable”, such as smoking, obesity, sedentary lifestyle, screenings make it possible to detect a possible abnormality or cancer early, even before symptoms appear.
