Destroyer | Wiggle with Tintoretto ★★★½

Jacopo Robusti, known as Tintoretto, is one of the most important painters of the Renaissance. We owe him in particular the magnificent ceiling of the Scuola Grande of San Rocco, in Venice.

Dan Bejar is the lead singer and songwriter of Destroyer, a Canadian band that pours into unpretentious art-rock and crooner-glam.

Until Friday, there was no link between these two artists who are five centuries apart. Then came LABYRINTHITIS13and album of the Vancouver band, where we discover the disturbing piece Tintoretto, It’s for You. ” The ceiling’s on fire and the contract is binding “, sings Bejar in reference to the contract that Tintoretto obtained after the fire of the Doge’s Palace in 1577.

So… historico-cerebral, this new opus of Destroyer? Not at all ! No need to have taken an art history course to appreciate creation.

Irony, self-mockery and sarcasm: Destroyer still and always takes a sharp look at the consumer society and the shortcomings of humanoids, these lovers of the virtual social image. And the construction of this new record in a pandemic period did not soften the words of the hairy Bejar, quite the contrary: “ You went to Montreal, you went to Spain, But it doеsn’t make sense, not thе third or the fourth time, No matter how you frame it, Sun ain’t gonna shine through your window or your front door “, he proclaims in a voice still as detached on The Stateswhile a disco rhythm pulsates in the back and pushes us to sway.

Because here is a strength of Destroyer: he knows how to make us dance! The musical canvas is painted here with brushstrokes soaked in rock – saturated guitar, slamming drums, fat bass – and in the soft dance glam – beat box and synthetic atmosphere on the menu.

LABYRINTHITIS is certainly the most danceable record of the band’s discography. But… He lacks a clear guideline to rise above the majors Kaputt (2011), Poison Season (2015) and Have We Met (2020). However, let’s not spoil our pleasure: new compositions signed Destroyer are always welcome!

Destroyer will be at the Fairmount Theater on May 9.
