The climate conference closed on November 12. If strong measures have been taken, India has chosen to reduce its use of coal instead of leaving it. A paradox for the country which undergoes a wave of significant pollution.
Like every winter, New Delhi (India) is submerged by a thick haze of pollution. During the weekend, the level of fine particles in theair exceeded the recommended threshold by twenty times. Pollution which infiltrates into houses. Some Indian families are even forced to use an air purifier in their homes. This pollution creates great concern for future generations.
The people of New Delhi are exasperated by this pollution. The Indian capital is one of the most polluted cities in the world. According to locals, pollution has created many respiratory illnesses among residents. Third country with the highest greenhouse gas emissions in the world, 70% of India’s electricity comes from coal. Despite this gloomy observation, the country refuses to give up coal mining. Unable to get rid of coal for economic and geographic reasons, India has pledged to reduce its use and use renewable energy by 2030.
