Already well underway after its big victory against Tanzania (3-0) during the first day of the group stage, Morocco started this second day as leader of group F. A victory against the Democratic Republic of Congo, Sunday , would have offered him his ticket to the round of 16. We will still have to wait a little, after this draw between the two teams (1-1), Sunday January 21, at the stade Laurent Pokou, at San Pédro (Ivory Coast).
The Atlas Lions struck hard from the start: in the 6th minute, well served from a corner by Hakim Ziyech, Achraf Hakimi opened the scoring with a right-footed volley. A goal in advance which allowed Walid Regragui’s men to manage, without however managing to take cover. At the end of the first period, a handball from Selim Amallah gave the DRC a chance to come back to score on a penalty. But Cédric Bakambu’s shot ended on Yassine Bounou’s right post (42nd).
Silas Katompa-Mvumpa as savior
A time saved by the post, Morocco was unable to maintain its lead. Entering shortly after the hour mark to replace Gaël Kakuta, it was Silas Katompa-Mvumpa who came to deceive Bounou with a right-footed shot (76th). The Democratic Republic of Congo could even have reversed the score, with an opportunity from Samuel Moutoussamy, cleared on the wire by Hakimi (79th).
While waiting for the other group match between Zambia and Tanzania, this Sunday, Morocco remains leader of this group F. But it will have to wait to validate a possible ticket for the round of 16. The Democratic Republic of Congo is provisionally second, with two points.
