Marine Le Pen continues her trip to Mayotte, the French island in the Indian Ocean where she arrived on Saturday April 20, four days after the launch of operation “Place Net” by the government aimed at arresting gang leaders and to expel undocumented immigrants, most of them Comorians.
On the ground, most residents have not yet seen the results of this new security operation, and are in despair, as in the Cavani district of Mamoudzou (the prefecture town).
African migrants waiting or sleeping on makeshift mattresses on the sidewalks, trash in every direction, clothes hanging down. For André it’s too much: “This is the state France has left us in. Conditions like this are unacceptable!”
These residents can no longer stand what is happening right in front of their homes. Anliatime Voulana, a mother, explains what has been happening for a month. “The migrants had stormed our Cavani stadium, she says. The camp was dismantled but the problem was not resolved. It’s moved to our alley where they camp and relieve themselves in our streets“, she relates.
No concrete results
Exasperated residents who see no change despite the launch of operation “Clean Square” by the government a few days ago. “I haven’t seen any change. There are police officers along the roads when our children go out, but that’s it. That’s it.” notes Anliatime Voulana. For her neighbor, elected official Laini Abdallah Boina, there are not 36 solutions: “Send back those who can be deported and find other solutions for those who are considered regular, as they say, either send them to mainland France or to Europe.”
And above all, we must stop the flow of boats arriving from the Comoros and Africa, for André. “There are boats every day, we do nothing at all, we announced ‘the iron barrier’ but where is it? I have never seen it”, he gets impatient. He refers to the “iron curtain in the water” announced by Gérald Darmanin last February to prevent the passage of people migrating illegally by boat.
André is angry with the government for not keeping its promises. So the inhabitants of Cavani pass on their messages to anyone who is willing to listen. The latest is Marine Le Pen. “She’s not in government, but once she sees what we’re going through here, she’ll still be able to throw a rant like she usually does.hopes Laini Abdallah Boina. This will perhaps push the government to act quickly because we no longer live.”
A mother adds: “She announced solutions that could really get Mayotte out of all this. But unfortunately, she is not in power to help us currently.” Like many Mahorais, this mother is preparing to vote for the National Rally in the next elections.
