The department of Indre is in turn mobilizing to contribute to the reception of refugees from Ukraine. Aid for the Red Cross and Civil Protection was released unanimously by elected officials.
50,000 euros in subsidies have thus been granted to the Red Cross, announced President Marc Fleuret, for its field actions at international but also national and local level. In Châteauroux, the association’s volunteers work to welcome refugees. “We welcome incoming Ukrainians and equip them.” explains Maryvonne Baillou, head of the Castelroussine branch of the Red Cross “They will have apartments, they will have to be furnished, equipped“. The Red Cross, which also tries to provide moral support however, comes up against the language barrier and appeals to people who speak Ukrainian and French. “the big problem is to find Ukrainian interpreters to be able to talk to them. If someone speaks Ukrainian, let them come to us, we will welcome them with open arms.”
For its part, the Civil Protection, which collects, sorts, packs and ships tons of basic necessities to Poland, will be able to count on the reinforcement of 3 fixed-term contracts whose salaries will be covered by the departmental council. The association says it also wants to turn now to fundraising for the purchase of rarer and more specialized products, in particular medical equipment such as respirators or hospital beds.
