In a few clicks and in complete anonymity, it is possible to denounce tax evaders. In Baden-Württemberg (Germany), a region bordering Alsace, a reporting platform is available in French. Internet users are invited to be precise, and to attach documents. Without ever revealing their identity, they can then communicate with the tax authorities, if the latter needs clarification.

89 investigations opened in 2022

When the site opened two years ago, many denounced the initiative. But in 2022 alone, more than 3,000 denunciations were received. If the vast majority are closed without action, 89 investigations were opened in 2022. The authorities assume this incitement to denunciation. “It allowed us to recover 1 million euros in taxes. So, in our eyes, it shows that it’s worth it”, comments Sebastien Engelmann, spokesperson for the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Finance. In Germany, tax evasion is estimated at more than 50 billion euros each year.
