The Danish government will order the closure of cinemas, theaters and concert halls in an attempt to curb the record outbreak of Covid-19 cases accelerated by the Omicron variant, Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen announced on Friday (December 17th). The Scandinavian country has recorded a new all-time high of more than 11,000 cases in the past 24 hours, she said at a press conference.

Denmark, at the forefront of sequencing, is one of the countries in the world to have detected the most cases of Omicron on its soil. According to the European Commission, Omicron could become dominant by mid-January in the EU, where only 67% of the population are fully vaccinated.
