The former star prosecutor of the Charbonneau commission and former inspector general of the City of Montreal, Me Denis Gallant returns to the municipal sphere. The City of Montreal announced Wednesday its appointment to the position of Director of Penal and Criminal Prosecutions in the Legal Affairs Department.
Meeting behind closed doors on Wednesday, the executive committee endorsed the appointment of Mr.e Gallant who will take office on September 19. Specialized in criminal law and member of the Barreau du Québec since 1990, Denis Gallant became known to the general public when he held the position of Deputy Chief Prosecutor of the Commission of Inquiry on the Awarding and Management of Contracts public in the construction industry.
In February 2014, the former mayor Denis Coderre had recruited him to entrust him with the newly created post of Inspector General of the City. After leaving the City, Mr.e Gallant had become the first CEO of the Autorité des marchés publics (AMP) set up in the wake of the work of the Charbonneau commission. He had a seven-year term, but resigned 15 months later to return to the practice of criminal law with the firm Roy Bélanger.
In a press release published Wednesday, the City of Montreal specifies that Me Gallant “will actively participate in the optimization work already undertaken by the Department of Penal and Criminal Prosecutions”.
Denis Gallant will receive an annual salary of $201,395. He replaces Claude Dussault who held the position of Director of Penal and Criminal Prosecutions at the City before being appointed judge of the Municipal Court last May.
