It was on Instagram that designer Denis Gagnon announced in recent days that he was closing his boutique on rue Saint-Paul on 1er next September. This fashion staple in Quebec is known for its architectural and feminine style, and its love for leather, its favorite material.
After running a boutique for 14 years, Denis Gagnon wishes to concentrate on more personal projects and will continue his creations for Maison Simons. “Having a store today is no longer so important, it’s so much work and it’s too demanding,” he said in a telephone interview. He mentions the difficulty of finding labor and the excessive turnover of staff. The administrative management of the store also weighs on him, as does the competition. “There are banners that compete with us, whether it’s SSENSE for example, or even Zara, that’s why I’m closing. And I must also say that I am fleeing rue Saint-Paul before it is gutted for two years, starting this fall, I do not want to experience that. »
He assures that he will continue to create and rediscover the passion for creation, without the administrative and commercial burden. “There are so many changes in the fashion business that I no longer want to participate in it in this way. It’s time to try something else, time flies and you have to keep going. I want to move forward and rediscover the essence of creation. »
