Denis Côté again in competition at the Berlinale

Quebec filmmaker Denis Côté is once again in competition at the Berlin International Film Festival.

A summer like this, written and directed by Denis Côté, is one of the 18 films in the official selection announced on Wednesday by the organizers of the Berlinale who will compete for the prestigious Golden and Silver Bears.

The film will have its world premiere at the 72nd Berlin Film Festival, which will take place “in presence” next month.

This is the fourth time the director has appeared in competition at the Berlinale.

In A summer like this, Denis Côté stages three women (played by Larissa Corriveau, Laure Giappiconi and Aude Mathieu), reunited for 26 days in a nursing home, discussing their intimacy in the company of a caring therapist and social worker. Over the course of these exchanges, the three young women tame their demons and begin a healing process.

Among his previous feature films, Vic + Flo saw a bear and Social hygiene had been respectively rewarded at the Berlinale in 2013 (Silver Bear) and in 2021 (Prize for the best realization in the “Encounters” section).

A summer like this should be released in theaters in the coming months.

The Berlin International Film Festival will take place in attendance next month despite the rise in the number of COVID-19 cases in Germany. Strict public health measures must be enforced at one of the world’s most famous film festivals.

The opening is still scheduled for February 10, and the rewards will be given out a little earlier than originally planned, on February 16.

Among the films in official competition are the opening film of the festival, peter von kant by French director and screenwriter François Ozon, and With love and determination, by filmmaker Claire Denis, starring Juliette Binoche, Vincent Lindon, Grégoire Colin and Bulle Ogier.
