Imagine the following situation: an American comes to the hospital for health care, but the doctor refuses to offer it in English. The news would be broadcast and denounced on all platforms. With reason.
But in Quebec, it is unfortunately the inescapable reality. A woman who had just been raped was refused treatment at the Montreal General Hospital because she dared to speak only French. As an Anglophone who lives in the West Island, I often find myself alone in my entourage defending the French language and the Quebec nation. Unfortunately, defending my homeland has somehow become a lèse-majesté crime. But even with this kind of controversy occurring regularly, many people persist in looking away from the poor situation of French in Quebec.
Some often repeat that Quebecers know French more than ever. It should therefore be noted that 5% of the Quebec population unfortunately has no command of French at all, i.e. almost half a million of our fellow citizens. It’s like 16 million Americans can’t speak English!
This is why Quebecers must assume and affirm themselves as a distinct nation and not be ashamed when it receives the opprobrium and wrath of English Canada or the imperialist United States.
