It may come as a surprise at this time of year, but the tiger mosquito is still very present in France. Health authorities are warning of the rise in dengue fever cases.
They sting, itch and can turn our daily lives into hell. These are tiger mosquitoes. “It is true that there are many, many, many”, commented a man. “We couldn’t have dinner once on the terrace”, laments a woman. This insect certainly represents a nuisance but also a danger, because its bites are responsible for diseases such as dengue fever.
Flu-like symptoms such as fever, muscle and joint pain or fatigue can lead to hospitalizations. “(…) Transmission is by mosquito bite. If the mosquito bites an infected person, it becomes contaminating for another person”warns Professor Michel Carles, head of the infectious diseases department CHU de Nice (Alpes-Maritimes).
An exceptional operation took place in Strasbourg (Bas-Rhin), where agents in full suits went to war against tiger mosquitoes after the discovery of a case of dengue fever. Indeed, they proliferate because of global warming.
