They were at least a hundred to stand in Place Jacques-Cartier in Old Montreal on Saturday around noon.
An elderly lady moved to tears when the Ukrainian anthem sounds. A couple embracing with their shoulders covered in a huge Ukrainian flag. Teenagers who came with their parents or their friends.
“Economic sanctions are not enough. We have to do more,” laments Sofia, a young girl of Ukrainian origin who came to demonstrate with her friends.
The rally ended peacefully around 1 p.m. to the sound of the Canadian national anthem.
“Russia thought they had Ukraine quickly. But we are still here. They failed miserably,” said Honorary Consul of Ukraine in Montreal Eugene Czolij to the applause of those gathered to protest against the Russian invasion.
But Mr. Czolij looked grim. The Russian army commits “war crimes against children” and continues “its genocide of the Ukrainian people”, he was indignant at the microphone.
