Anger of farmers: demands that could cost the state dearly as it seeks to reduce its spending

Anger of farmers: demands that could be costly for the State, which wants to reduce its spending – (France 2)

To emerge from the crisis, farmers are awaiting aid which could represent several hundred million euros in the state budget, at a time when the Minister of the Economy is seeking to reduce spending.

The anger and demands of farmers could weigh heavily on the state budget: several hundred million euros, while public finances are already plunging into the red. At the end of 2023, the state deficit widened, estimated at -173.3 billion euros. Disappointing tax revenues with the slowdown in activity are to blame. There are 4.4 billion euros less revenue for corporate tax. For income tax, it is 1.4 billion euros less in state coffers, just like for VAT.

12 billion euros in savings promised this year

Responding to farmers’ demands would significantly complicate the budgetary equation. The government promised to find 12 billion euros in savings this year. In any case, the Minister of the Economy Bruno Le Maire will have to review his budgetary copy if he wants to meet the objective stated by the President of the Republic of bringing the public deficit below the 3% mark by the end of the five-year term.
