The company was sentenced to a record fine on Tuesday, April 19. A decision that could change the situation concerning the “uberization” of the economy and the use of self-employed workers.

The Deliveroo home meal delivery platform was sentenced on Tuesday, April 19, to a fine of 375,000 euros for concealed work. This is the maximum amount provided by law. Two of the leaders of the company at the time of the facts were sentenced to one year in prison, suspended. “A strong symbol”analyzed at 11 p.m., Sophie Lanson, journalist in the economic department of franceinfo.

The company was accused of having employed independent deliverers between 2015 and 2017, when it should have paid them. This is the first criminal trial of this magnitude concerning the “uberization” of certain services which make extensive use of independent workers. The decision could set a precedent while companies like Take it easy or Uber should soon face justice. Deliveroo plans to appeal this decision. In France, around 415,000 freelancers work for around a hundred platforms.
