The sea urchin fishery started a month late compared to other years. A date postponed voluntarily throughout the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region, the species needs to be preserved.

Sébastien Touyeras, professional fisherman, has worked for many years in the port of Cannes (Alpes-Maritimes). Whenever he has to fish for sea urchins, he can’t suppress his broad smile. The fisherman left his nets on the bridge to go pick up sea urchins. “I will see if the stock has returned and if the quality is good. We must also check the size which is 5 centimeters without counting the quills, he reports.

The fishing period has been postponed by 30 days at the request of professional fishermen in the Var and the Alpes-Maritimes. A decision that allows fishermen to ensure a better yield, but above all, to offer sea urchins a period of biological rest. If fishing is regulated, it is because sea urchins play an essential role for the marine environment. It allows the regulation of algae by swallowing them. Even if the ban on fishing for small sea urchins is tightened, they are struggling to reproduce.
