In the Philippines, the area covered by forests has been shrinking for years. A situation leading to devastating floods.

In a country ravaged by deforestation, this green expanse seems like a survivor. Less than 30 km from Manila, the capital of the Philippines, the Masungi reserve covers 3,000 hectares. Opened in 2015, it is managed by a foundation whose preservation of this space is a perpetual struggle. “The threats are constant: that of a quarry of thousands of hectares on our reforestation project, the grabbing and trafficking of land on the part, not of ordinary people, but of society in search of profit”laments Ann Durnaliang, administrator of the foundation of the Masungi nature reserve.

Green expanses are shrinking year after year

A battle often lost across the country. In 2003, the Philippines was covered by 2.56 million hectares of forest compared to 2.22 million hectares in 2020, despite reforestation efforts. Illegal logging and open pit mining are hiding behind this significant decline, leading to flooding.
