The President of the Republic announced the end of Operation Barkhane, Wednesday, November 9, in Toulon (Var). Emmanuel Macron also said that it was necessary to review the defense strategy of the French army, in the context of the war in Ukraine.
Exercises have recently been carried out by the French army in order to actively prepare for the possibility of a high-intensity war, such as the one currently unfolding on Ukrainian soil. Present in Toulon (Var) on Wednesday November 9, the President of the Republic, Emmanuel Macron, warns: “Europe, in fact, is no longer safe from missile strikes, drones and we must integrate this reality“. To respond to this new problem, France will have to increase its arsenal. France has only 222 operational tanks, while Russia loses 200 every month.
The French arsenal will therefore have to be increased. “The French army today, it has almost all the capabilities but in numbers, in quantities, very much lower than what we could need for a high intensity engagement“, describes Bruno Tertrais, deputy director of the foundation for strategic research. The defense budget will, however, be increased by three billion euros in 2023, but this should not be enough to entirely make up for the delay. The war in Ukraine also confirms to France the usefulness of NATO in terms of defence.
