Unlucky in the draw, Varvara Gracheva was eliminated at the start of the US Open, Monday August 26 (6-2, 6-0), by the defending champion and world number 3 Coco Gauff. The best French player at Roland-Garros, where she reached the round of 16, the 24-year-old player lost in the first round in New York (United States) for the third consecutive year.

Facing her, Coco Gauff did not appear very confident, after being eliminated in the third round at the Olympic Games and the WTA 1000 in Toronto, then from her first match in Cincinnati. But against the Frenchwoman, the American, the crowd’s favorite, showed more control and confidence. More focused on the decisive points, in a balanced first set, she saved 6 break points. Varvara Gracheva, for her part, only managed two winners in the first set, before collapsing in the second. The American will face German Tatjana Maria in the second round.
