Defender Gabriele Corbo returns to CF Montreal and signs a two-year pact

CF Montreal announced on Monday that defender Gabriele Corbo is back with the team, following a transfer from Italian club Bologna FC, and has signed a two-year contract.

The contract covers the 2023 and 2024 seasons and comes with an option year in 2025, the team’s management said in a press release.

“We are very happy to be able to find Gabriele with us, but this time permanently,” said CF Montreal vice-president and chief sports officer Olivier Renard in the team’s official press release.

“He showed great things with us last season and his return will increase the competition in the squad. He will now have the chance to establish himself well in Montreal. »

In 2022, Corbo played 14 regular season games, including 13 starts, for a total of 1,134 minutes of playing time.

While on loan, the 23-year-old Italian notably concluded his first season in MLS with an 85.9 percent passing success rate and 13 interceptions.

The centre-back also started in the first leg of the Concacaf Champions League Round of 16 tie against Santos Laguna. He had also played two matches in the Canadian Championship, against Forge FC and Toronto FC.

Prior to joining CF Montreal in 2022, Corbo joined Ascoli on loan from Bologna FC for the 2020-2021 season. He played 14 games in the Italian second division before making the jump to North America.

On an international break, CF Montreal began its season with three losses in as many road trips before signing a spectacular 3-2 victory against the Philadelphia Union in its home opener on Saturday night at Olympic Stadium.

Romell Quioto, with his second of the game, scored the winner in second half stoppage time.

Hernan Losada’s men will resume training Wednesday at Olympic Stadium and will play their next game on Saturday, April 1 in Vancouver, against the Whitecaps.
