Residents in an area of Aberdeen have been told they will have to move soon, due to faulty concrete used to construct their building.

Residents of a peaceful neighborhood on the Scottish coast, Aberdeen, have just learned that their social housing was built with faulty concrete. Faced with the risk of collapse, 300 households must move. The cause is cellular concrete slabs, widely used in low-cost construction between the 1950s and 1990s in the United Kingdom.

150 schools closed at the start of the 2023 school year

This porous concrete becomes very friable over time. Some plates have given way in classrooms in recent years, without causing any injuries.“The problem with this concrete is that no one understands when and how it will fail”, analyzes Peter Drummond, representative of Scottish architects. 150 British schools have been closed urgently. This defective concrete is also found in many hospitals, courts and police stations built in the 1960s and 1970s. But this is the first time that it has forced hundreds of residents to abandon their homes.
