The visitors won 1-0 after a game where the Montrealers never found their rhythm offensively. Without Lassi Lappalainen in the left corridor, injured in the adductors, the locals could not break the tight lines of the New Yorkers, who came to the metropolis resolute.
Their objective became increasingly clear after the goal that gave them the lead in the 43rde minute. Lewis Morgan went there with a small lob in the box to thwart James Pantemis. Reward for a hitherto solid performance by the Red Bulls, and the fruit of good work on the counter-attack.
They would continue to employ this strategy in the second half. Until Wilfried Nancy’s changes take effect. The entries of Zachary Brault-Guillard on the right and Matko Miljevic in the middle in particular, followed by that of Jojea Kwizera on the left, finally gave wings to the CFM.
The best chance of the match for Montreal came from the foot of Mason Toye, another substitute, in the 76e. However, he missed the frame.
The first half was played altogether uneventfully before the goal of the Red Bulls. In addition to the tendency that Joaquín Torres had to keep the ball a few moments too long. His greed ended up limiting his options as the funnel closed in on him, in addition to eliminating those offered by his teammates.
That said, he was the only Montrealer who created action in the first period. With a slightly better balanced distribution of the ball on his part, his success would have been more likely.
This result ends the eight-game unbeaten streak for CF Montreal.
